Case Study — Screw and Bolt Inspection with Ai1 and Medusa

Screws and bolts are critical fastening components used in structural and industrial assemblies. Automated inspection of these parts requires speed, precision, and reliability to ensure mechanical integrity and coating uniformity. For this project, the customer required a compact, high-performance, fully automated solution.

Technical Solution

The system is based on the Ai1 All-In-One module, equipped with onboard Medusa software. The bolt or screw head is inspected through a multi-mirror system, while a lateral camera handles detailed inspection of the thread.

The entire setup uses integrated high-power lighting, optimized to reveal cracks, oxidation marks, non-uniform coating, and thread anomalies. The system operates at 5 bolts per second in a continuous cycle.

Detected Defects
  • Cracks on head or thread
  • Oxidation defects
  • Coating inconsistencies
  • Thread geometry anomalies
Dimensional Measurements
  • Thread pitch
  • Head diameter
  • Shaft length
Software and Flexibility

The Medusa software allows users to filter detected defects based on geometric characteristics such as width, height, surface area, and position. It is possible to define custom quality profiles based on production type or part category.
